This drama is so special to me, since it’s the very first Asian drama I’ve ever watched. It’s the reason I got hooked. Before I begin I’m here reviewing the 2007 version, I just realized that there’s a Japanese remake released in 201, but I haven’t watched it. Also, there’s a Taiwanese and recently a Korean version, they’re all based on the amazing manga by the same name.
There are many differences from the manga and drama. Though the concept and characters are the same, the story is described differently. For example Sano got injured from saving his friend, while in the drama he got injured from saving Mizuki. Genders are also different in the drama as well. Akiha is supposed to be a guy, however the character is portrayed as a woman in the drama. In the manga Sano found out Mizuki’s true gender when he accidentally “felt her up”, but in the drama Sano finds out Mizuki’s a girl when he overhears Mizuki talking to her brother. Nakatsu also found out about Mizuki’s gender a lot earlier, while in the manga he finds out Mizuki’s true gender along with everyone else.
There’s no “Korean vs. Japanese” since I didn’t watch the Korean version yet. When I watch it, I’ll write a separate review.
- General info:
Title: 花ざかりの君たちへ / Hanazakari no Kimitachi e
Title (English): For You in Full Blossom
Tagline: イケメン♂パラダイス / Ikemen Paradise (Hottie Paradise)
Genre: school, romance, comedy
Episodes: 12 episode + 1 special
The series centers on Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl who lives in the United States. One day, she sees a track and field competition on TV, and becomes attracted to one of the high jump competitors, Izumi Sano. She begins to idolize the young athlete and eventually transfers to Japan to attend the same school that Sano attends. There is a catch, however: Sano attends an all-boys high school, named Osaka Gakuen and Mizuki must disguise herself as a boy to enter, and tries her best to give hope to Sano after hearing that he no longer does the high jump anymore.
Ashiya Mizuki: The cheerful sweet heroine of the story. She’s a Japanese girl living in the USA, and happens to see Sano Izumi and his high Jumping on TV and becomes an instant fan. Yet due to an incedint she took part in, he quit high Jumping. So she made it her job to convince him o jump again and slowly starts to turn him into a new man. She’s really cute, athletic, funny yet a little too nosy and a bit too naïve. She’s like the best heroine EVER!
Sano Izumi: The high jumper and cold guy. He’s the guy that Mizuki goes to an all-boys school for. He’s too cold and even though at the ending he’s supposed to have opened up a lot he’s still too reserved and not much of a talker. He knew about Mizuki’s secret from the start and didn’t say a thing. He has some family problems with his father and brother that even Mizuki will help him get over, Oh and he has this little problem with alcohol xD
Nakatsu Shuichi: The happy-go-lucky soccer player, he’s possibly the funniest character in jdrama history, especially with his monologues and the way he kept justifying him liking Mizuki before he found out that she was a girl. He’s too cute and funny not to mention hot. He’s the possibly the most guy I’ve wanted a heroine to choose instead of the main guy.
Kayashima Taiki: or also known as the aura guy, he’s just too cute and his acting is super adorable, I just can’t believe that he’s Tamaki in Ouran High school host club drama!
Nanba Minami: Dorm 2 Head, the playboy that’s adored by cutie guy Nakao. He’s just amazing and childish at times and so mature at times (THE GRADUATION!)
Tennouji Megumi: Dorm 1Head, and head of martial arts club. This guy is obsessed with 3 things: saying “babyyyh”, showing off his abs, and Kanna. He’s cue and got the second best facial expressions, along with his hilarious dorm guys.
Masao Himejima (Oscar): Dorm 3 Head, and the first best facial expressions ever!! I mean he’s head of a drama club, and he gets possessed every episode (if that’s even possible!). He could the most hilarious of them all, his acting dramatic… is actually funny!
Hibari Four: These are group of 5 girls, Hibari, Komari, Kanna, Erika, and Juyri. They’re funny and each –somehow- manage to find somehow who’s just like them, guess who’s hibari ending with?!
The acting is hilarious, especially if you’re watching for the second time and start noticing the random guys at the background of every scene; they’re so random and funny! They are all so hyped up, there’s not even a single serious episode, something funny has to happen, and also the romance isn’t really focused on. Maki is so cute in that role, probably her best. Shun was probably not feeling enough chemistry however, he just wasn’t that much into his role but at times he was just adorable! On the other hand Toma is the STAR of this show, he’s da bomb! He’s the funniest and he really brought Nakatsu alive ( I don’t want to be disappointed with any other nakatsu, this is the one and only nakatsu for me!). The Three dorm heads are great especially when they’re together (Sakura Committee FTW).
Is it funny?
It’s nothing but funny!!! I laughed at every single episode they’re hilarious and they keep adding challenges that force you to laugh even more! I mean cheering on an Avril Lavigne song? They are adorable, probably this is the show where I’ve laughed the most!
- Is it Romantic/tear-jerking?
Not really, I mean romance should be removed from the genre, the manga was more romantic. They didn’t give Mizuki and sano time to develop feelings. I don’t mind the laughs but where is the love? I cried at some scenes especially the last episode when she was leaving! But other than that not really a tearful show, a very light one!
The show has two main songs; opening is “Ikenai Tayiou” by Orange Range, and ending is “PEACH” by Ai Otsuka. Both of songs are really addictive and pretty good, one is hyper and catchy and the second is too sweet, really suitable.
Also the songs they’ve used along the episodes are really suitable for each situation and not being overly cheesy! Just perfect!
- Hotness Level/ Style:
There’s not really style here, since most of the time they’re in their school uniforms but it’s truly a “Hottie Paradise” and here’s why:
- Moments to Remember:
Kayashima’s reaction (Click here for cuteness), Nakatsu singing I’m not a Homo (Click here for endless laughs), One of Nakatsu’s endless monologues (Click here for Ike Ike Go Go), and Sano’s one and only monologue (Click here for “Love Me Tender”). These are only some examples of why this show is so memorable, and here’s some reason why!
- Did it end well?
It ended too fast; I wanted more episodes, more developing for Sano & Mizuki as they missed some really good parts in the manga! Also the special though it focused a little more on Sano & Mizuki there’re still some awkwardness when they met, they’re supposed to be girlfriend/boyfriend!! The special is set in an valentine event where sano & NaKatsu remember the last week of vacation (which we get to see) and try to figure out when sano started falling for Mizuki, it’s sweet and got some good laughs, but not enough romance!
- Rating: 5/5! It’s my first drama ever, It’ll be “Forever in My heart” see what I did there 😀 ?
